Locked-In Syndrome

L ocked-in syndrome is a rare neurological condition in which a person is fully conscious but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes. The condition is caused by damage to the brainstem, which is the part of the brain that connects the spinal cord to the rest of the brain. Symptoms of locked-in syndrome typically include quadriplegia, or complete paralysis of all four limbs, as well as the inability to speak or make facial expressions. Some people with locked-in syndrome are able to communicate by using eye movements or blinking to indicate yes or no answers to questions. The exact cause of locked-in syndrome can vary, but it is often the result of a stroke or traumatic brain injury.
